Monotype “demo” to Preston Art Society
In March 2026 I provided a demonstration on monotype techniques . I also showed how a monotype that does not meet one’s expectations can be re-worked thereby becoming a monotype and mixed media. The monotype produced here was done by applying and removing oil base intaglio ink using scrim, brushes, card, fingers, thumbs, palm of my hand, cocktail sticks, kitchen roll and cut up pieces of mount-board. I did not use a roller but I very ocassionally do.
I also took along a monotype where I was less than satisfied with some of the tonal values. I used it to show how one can work into it using thin washes of intaglio ink diluted with distilled turpentine..much as one would use watercolour washes. I also applied ink with my hand showing how subtle changes can be effected. The monotype produced at the demo took about 45 minutes and there were some areas that I felt needed attention. On my return to my studio I made adjustments to it using the techniques mentioned above. Sometimes monotypes turn out well, sometimes they do not but can be salvaged using mixed media and sometimes they end up in the bin.
